My multi-layered paintings are made of several sheets of collaged and painted plastic. First I create a painting on canvas that is compositionally complete and mount it on a metal backed acrylic sheet. I take some of my pictures with a digital camera. Some images are found and scanned. I manipulate the color, size and texture of these images and print them on a clear film. I then transfer these to the subsequent sheets of acrylic, adding more paint and drawing around them. When assembled, the colors and images composite with those above and below. Because the layers are separated, light is allowed to come inside, illuminating the painting from within. In this way, light becomes an element in the media mix. As the sun moves across the sky, or the interior lights illuminate the piece in the evening, different layers become highlighted. Direct sunlight creates shadows that move across the piece during the day. The angle and movement of the viewer passing by allow a peek underneath the images, also shifting the overall appearance slightly.

As a result of its ever-changing nature, as well as the disparate collection of images, the assembled piece gives a dream-like experience. It invites the viewer to complete the artistic process by creating a story to give it meaning and thereby experience the layers of their own imagination.
